Chicago Summer Dance

Summer time in Chicago is chock full of amazing fun and free activities. Tourists and locals alike take place of the most amazing outdoor dance school in the world. From June 17th to August 29th, four nights a week, the people of the City of Chicago gather at 601 S. Michigan Avenue in the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park.
Thursdays through Saturdays the program starts at 6 pm (Sundays at 4 pm) and continues to 9:30 pm (Sundays 7 pm) you don’t want to miss the first hour because this will make your Chicago experience. The evening starts with a free dance lesson. The instructors are kind, funny and open, and will help those who have come alone or with an unwilling partner to pair up with somebody for the experience. My first time, I learned how to do a Puerto Rican Merengue with a 65 year old Mexican Granny who was barely over 4 and a half feet tall!. Some of the all time favourites include Bhangra, Salsa, Klezmer, Polka, Tango, and Balkan Circle Dances.
There are refreshment stands on site selling alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and a variety of food. You can’t bring in outside drinks, but, there is the most amazing display of picnic gourmet that you have ever seen taking place across the park and a stall selling <a href="http://www.ortak.co.uk/contemporary.asp”>contemporary designer jewellery. Let yourself be inspired and visit some of Chicago’s amazing ethnic supermarkets to create an picnic feast for yourself! For a Salsa night why not visit the Pilsen neighbourhood http://www.pilsenportal.org/index.html and buy supplies of tamales, fresh fruit, warm tortillas, salsa, avocado and cheese from one of the traditional Mexican Grocery Stores. Or go further north to Devon Avenue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Avenue_(Chicago) the heart of Chicago’s South Asian Community to pick a samosas, pakoras, and other Indian snacks and sweets to go with a Bhangra lesson. Summer Dance is a great way to have fun and get to know the real Chicago.
