Always Be Prepared

Always Be Prepared

You need to know what you’re doing when you pack your bags for a year abroad. There’s got to be a lot of planning and a lot of thought that goes into the ultimate decision: what do you want to take.

Clearly there will be other factors. The amount of stuff you can carry will be defined by the width, height, depth and carrying capacity of your bag. This in turn will be largely influenced by the policy of the first airline you take. Provided it isn’t ridiculously liberal, of course, otherwise it might be a one-way flight.

Where you intend to go will change what you decide to take as well. If you’re going to be in Thailand for six months, you’ll probably want to take your swimming trunks and a big list of emergency telephone numbers, health insurance certificates and some decent books. If you’re going to a wedding in Portugal, you’ll want to take some money and perhaps a wedding favour. If you’re jetting off to South America then you’ll need some literature by Che Guevara (can’t remember the title of his main book) and the keys to a motorcycle.

If you’re doing something less touristy, you’ll have to plan ahead a bit more. Compasses, hiking gear, satellite phone, medicine and first aid kit, visas, perhaps even some tinned food – all of these things will come in very handy if you end up stuck in a forest outside Pripyat with half an hour to go until nightfall.

Taking the Hybrid on tour

Taking the Hybrid on tour

As a car lover, I am always looking to purchase the latest and greatest in the world of automobiles. I have worked so hard my entire life to be able to purchase cars of all sorts and varieties. I have owned some of the hottest sports cars, and these are some cars that people would go crazy for. However, there is one car that has recently captured all of my attention and love for cars. The car that I truly love and have taken an affinity to is the new jazz hybrid. This car is pure ecstasy and phenomenal for so many reasons.

First off, I love the smooth way in which this car drives. When one drives this car, it feels like he or she is gliding on butter. This car offers one of the most high quality driving experiences I have had in quite some time. Whenever I drive this car, I feel like I am driving a sports cars that could have cost millions. Instead, I am driving my moderately priced new jazz hybrid.

In addition, this car simply feels like a luxury car with its sweet interior. This car has the softest leather seats one will ever sit in. I love the different music features in this car as well. The sound system is to die for and is simply worth every penny a person pays for this car. I would highly recommend this car to anyone considering a new purchase. One will not be sorry with the purchase of this vehicle, as it is one of the hottest cars right now.

Culture crossover

Culture crossover

Having been to Australia this cracks me up more than it might. Nothing like pandering to type for added comedic value. Seems it works when selling a product.
When looking at different adverts that have appeared on TV screens, viewers soon begin to appreciate the progress made by campaigns over the years. The new era of advertising from Fosters shows the importance of relaxing and taking things easy. After all, the last thing anyone wants is stress about the stuff that needs to be done after a long day at work. One’s main priority should be sitting down in front of a TV watching a football game, with a pint of Fosters and tasty nuts in the other hand.

For those who love Fosters, Most of the time, the campaigns that appear on Fosters TV are far more entertaining than the programmes airing there, and a good advert makes a great difference. Finally, something interesting to watch instead of rotund opera singers and Meerkats talking about the history of their price comparison website.

The adverts on Foster’s on TV are informative, educative, and promotional. Informative in that customers who didn’t have any idea on the Fosters beer will be informed of its availability. The advert is educative in the perspective that while advertising Foster’s, consumers are urged to drink responsibly and under age children are discouraged from taking the brew. Promotion in the perspective that the Foster beer is being promoted to a wide coverage of consumers because it is being advertised over a medium that reaches a wide range of clients. This helps attract more customers to purchase Foster’s beer.

World’s Priciest Streets

World’s Priciest Streets

World’s Priciest Streets

We all dream of being so wealthy that we never have to worry about money ever again don’t we? What if all of our dreams came true and we could literally have the world at our feet, where would we begin?

We could start off buying a massive house, a brilliant car from where ever in the world you would like, seeing as with the help of <a href="http://hubpages.com/hub/US-Car-Support“>US car support can ensure we receive our dream car, then live to achieve all of our dreams. While this may sound like a complete fairytale, dreams can happen. In the mean time, we can envy those living in the priciest places in the world.

Severn Road in Hong Kong shows the Western World just how close the East is at catching up with the many billionaires throughout America. Per meter squared, you will be looking at paying $70,000 for a property. For a 420 m2 apartment, it could set you back a hefty $36 million.

The richest places to live would not be complete without the likes of the Kensington Palace Gardens, even the name sounds pricy. More locally known in London as “Billionaire’s row” you will be looking at spending $65,000 per m2.

New York’s Fifth Avenue is also the second most expensive place to live in the world at $65,000 per m2. It holds its place whilst still suffering a 10% loss. Many who live in the apartments of the wealthy are a little reluctant to sell at this present climate in fear of losing money. We are all guessing whatever the loss is, they can afford it.

Hiking the Eco Friendly Way

The Chinese recently made an expedition especially to clean their side of Mt. Everest after all the garbage left behind by trekkers and mountain climbers. They recovered tons of waste that would have taken years to biodegrade if at all. One would expect those who are conquering nature to make friends with her but many a times it is mere exploitation for the sake of adventure. The wild is to be left as it is and not interfered with else it will cease to accept you as a part of it.

While having fun out in the wilderness you can remain eco friendly and still have a blast with your family or friends. Making a camping list would be a good start. Tents and sleeping bags made of recycled plastics are a good choice to start with. Of course you will take utensils for cooking and eating with you. You know in India down South even in this day and age they eat on clean, green banana leaves! They also make plates and bowls out of dry sterilized leaves. If you can’t find any of this maybe you could think about taking your own plates and cups with you rather than the disposable kinds. Use a detergent for cleaning of dishes and yourself that will not contaminate streams, lakes or groundwater.

Starting the fire at the campsite is one of the more fun things to do. Do not cut down live branches from trees rather use drift wood lying around or wood that has died and fallen rather then anything else. Stay on hiking trails so you do not cause damage to precious living organisms off the path. Most importantly, do not throw your trash in the wilderness. Carry it with you till you are able to find a designated place for disposal. Even cigarette butts are trash and should be carried with you! Whether you are a lawyer or a mortgage broker, whenever you are on the hiking trail don’t forget to become more of a conservationist.

A Walk Down Devon Avenue

A Walk Down Devon Avenue

While many of you may be considering a trip to America, how many of you have considered the city of Chicago? Buying campervans for sale and cruising around the desert is fine, but if you want a bit of city culture then it has to be Chicago.
Chicago is known for its ethnic neighbourhoods and some are more accessible to visitors than others. Chicago’s Devon Avenue stretches from Sheridan Road, close to the lakefront on the east and goes through several cultural revolutions until it ends at the city’s border with Lincolnwood in the west.
Getting to the heart of Devon Avenue can be a bit tricky on public transportation, there is a bus that runs the length of Devon Avenue which you can catch outside the Loyola University red line station, or you can enjoy the slow route along Western Avenue, one of the longest continuous street within the city of Chicago, and take the bus to the corner of Western and Devon, turn east for Northern India and west for Southern. East of Western Avenue, the shops and eateries are predominantly Muslim and influenced by the northern section of the Indian sub continent and Pakistan. Here on Oakland Street you find Hema’s Kitchen 2439 West Devon Avenue which has become a special favourite of diners visiting Devon Avenue not only because of the delicious food, but the warm and welcoming atmosphere.
West of Western is Gandhi Marg where you will find larger South Asian retail grocers like Patel Brothers 2610 West Devon Avenue mix with sweet and snack shops, sari palaces and some classic South Indian Vegetarian restaurants. At Mysore Woodlands 2548 W. Devon for 14.99 you can get the Royal Family Dosa which is the size of a small child! As Devon approaches the edge of the city on the west you find Chicago’s Orthodox Jewish Community with several Synagogues, Rosenblum’s World of Judaica 2906 W. Devon Avenue and the Tel Aviv Kosher Bakery.Walking the length of Devon Avenue you will the world’s major religions living, eating, and shopping side by side.

Chicago Summer Dance

Chicago Summer Dance

Summer time in Chicago is chock full of amazing fun and free activities. Tourists and locals alike take place of the most amazing outdoor dance school in the world. From June 17th to August 29th, four nights a week, the people of the City of Chicago gather at 601 S. Michigan Avenue in the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park.

Thursdays through Saturdays the program starts at 6 pm (Sundays at 4 pm) and continues to 9:30 pm (Sundays 7 pm) you don’t want to miss the first hour because this will make your Chicago experience. The evening starts with a free dance lesson. The instructors are kind, funny and open, and will help those who have come alone or with an unwilling partner to pair up with somebody for the experience. My first time, I learned how to do a Puerto Rican Merengue with a 65 year old Mexican Granny who was barely over 4 and a half feet tall!. Some of the all time favourites include Bhangra, Salsa, Klezmer, Polka, Tango, and Balkan Circle Dances.

There are refreshment stands on site selling alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and a variety of food. You can’t bring in outside drinks, but, there is the most amazing display of picnic gourmet that you have ever seen taking place across the park and a stall selling <a href="http://www.ortak.co.uk/contemporary.asp”>contemporary designer jewellery. Let yourself be inspired and visit some of Chicago’s amazing ethnic supermarkets to create an picnic feast for yourself! For a Salsa night why not visit the Pilsen neighbourhood http://www.pilsenportal.org/index.html and buy supplies of tamales, fresh fruit, warm tortillas, salsa, avocado and cheese from one of the traditional Mexican Grocery Stores. Or go further north to Devon Avenue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Avenue_(Chicago) the heart of Chicago’s South Asian Community to pick a samosas, pakoras, and other Indian snacks and sweets to go with a Bhangra lesson. Summer Dance is a great way to have fun and get to know the real Chicago.

Summer at Oslo

Summer at Oslo

One of the most amazing destinations I have ever visited was Oslo in Norway. Being a country from the Scandinavian Peninsula, Norway is a Northern country with severe winters and lots of snow. It is also one of the richest countries in the world and one of the greenest thanks to its green laws legislation and the public support for that, they even have actually hand towels in the public washrooms as oppose to ones that you throw away. This is the reason why I was stunned when I went to Oslo during the summer of 2009 -such a clean and beautiful place is hard to describe since usually people live in crowded cities that requite daily cleanings because of the waste. Oslo is below 2,000,000 people of population (a relatively big city for the European standards) and still is cleaner than even the smallest Swiss village.

Oslo is situated in the South part of the country -a beautiful place surrounded by mountains and sea, with the fiords around it like niddles stuck in a peace of wood -even before actually enetering the city, a visitor will see its surroundings and be amazed -it is not only a beautiful place to see but also makes you think about the miracles nature has created.

The city itself is both a modern and a well-preserved one- while walking through the clean streets and enjoying the freshness surrounding you, you will see not only the tall glass-made buildings, but the architectural Norweian heritage from the times of the vikings and the ancient inhabitants of the Peninsula.

However, these are not the only reasons why Oslo is one of the best destinations is Europe -the atmosphere, the hospitality, the interesting places and the smiley faces all around you make this city an amazing place to be in a country where the nature and the people live in a complete harmony.

See you in Siem Reap

See you in Siem Reap

Siem Reap in Cambodia is well and truly on the mass tourist trail. Getting that perfect travel photo of the major temples such as Angkor Wat or the Bayon often involves sharing your frame of the majestic half smile sculpture of King Jayvarman VII with the hoards of tourists who arrive en-masse on their air conditioned coaches. Trust me, these are photos that will end up on the shelves, not your storage unit on the other side of time. Tourists pile out at each unique temple, take a carbon copy picture for their scrap books and then pile back on to the bus to plod happily along to the next temple stop to repeat the same action. They often don’t take the time to wander in the darkened corridors of the temple, see the lichened covered Bas Relief’s, and appreciate the amazing craftsmanship that went into each individual temple.

It is no secret why so many are attracted to the charms of Siem Reap, the temples are extraordinary, the people are friendly and the history is terribly tumultuous and provoking. It has so much to offer the seasoned traveller who is willing to scratch below the surface and take the time to really see Siem Reap. But what are the experiences that add value to your trip, what are the experiences that remain vividly in your memory and make your trips meaningful? In the next few paragraphs are a few ideas that may make your stop in Siem Reap more than ’just temples’.

Get to know the locals, once you leave the main tourist trail, the people of Cambodia are very different. They are a far cry from the pushy postcard sales children and their parents at the stalls. They are a beautiful nation, with a rich culture that has had the very seams of its fabric torn apart by war and regime. I stopped off at Wat Athvea, a Pagoda on the way out to Tonle Sap Lake. The Pagoda is lovely, with very few visitors. However what made it worthwhile was the time I spent with the young Monks who live and study at the temple next to the Pagoda. They spent considerable time telling me about their temple, the paintings and art works and the religion. They were very happy to talk to a foreigner to practice their English. In return they asked for a small donation to go towards their temple. A small price to pay for a personal class on Cambodian culture!

Another great idea is a visit to the ACODO Orphanage, also on the road out to Tonle Sap Lake. You can visit the orphanage to meet the children, attend their nightly show or volunteer to teach English (or all three). The Orphanage relies solely on donations of visitors, and proceeds from a show that they run every evening for tourists which showcases Cambodian dancing music and singing. The children play musical instruments, sing and dance to traditional Cambodian Songs. The experience at the Orphanage is a humbling, and heart warming experience. It offers a visitor a unique opportunity to see performing Cambodian Arts, while helping children in need.

Another final idea is a visit to the Cambodian Land Mine Museum which is just outside of the town. It is run by Aki Ra, a child soldier turned self-taught de-miner. Aki Ra was recruited into the Khmer Rouge as a young boy, later, he realised the danger and destruction the mines caused, and subsequently began a lifelong quest to remove mines from Cambodia. Originally he was self taught but later received official training from the United Nations. All proceeds from entry into the museum go towards further de-mining activities in greater Cambodia. Aki and his wife also have up to 20 orphans living with them on their property. Aki provides the children with an education and opportunity.

Siem Reap is a thriving town that has more to offer than temples, why not take time to visit some of the other worthy gems hidden in the surrounding area. It is an opportunity to meet the locals, learn about the culture and modern society, and finally an opportunity to give to the people who need help the most.

Taking the overnight train

Taking the overnight train

Only recently, I visited Europe, where I stayed briefly in Germany, Italy, and France. I only had a few days in each country, and I figured that one way of saving a bit of time (and money) while traveling between countries was to take the overnight train. After all, I had to pay for somewhere to sleep, anyway, and European accommodation is hideously expensive, so I might as well travel and sleep at the same time. The whole train traveling thing, unfortunately, was a bit more dramatic than I’d expected. I started off by purchasing tickets from Nuremberg to Venice (it would have been 90 Euros cheaper if I’d ordered them the day before, the woman behind the counter helpfully told me). I didn’t pay for a bunk bed, choosing just to sleep siting up instead. Bad idea. These particular carriages don’t lock, meaning that anyone can come strolling in and out as they please. And they did. While most of the people were fine and normal, I had a terrifying incident where a man who was clearly under the influence of drugs staggered into my carriage and started threatening me. Finally, he left, and I was able to make a run for it, but it was one of the most frightening incidents of my life. On the way from Venice to Paris, I chose a carriage with a bunk cabin instead, meaning that I could lock myself in (albeit with five others) with relative safety. While I did meet a few nice people and got to chat with them, I also had a rather amorous Italian train driver take a fancy to me, all of which was a bit unnerving when you’re in a foreign country! I’m not sure I’d recommend traveling by overnight train alone unless you’re a very confident traveler, but it was certainly an adventure!

I have just updated the text on the page for adblue, I know that it might surprise you that I am working on some things for an oil company; but I don’t think they are as environmentally negligent as I once supposed. Plus, I’ve sold out, I need the pay!
